Expectations Policies and Rules for Marching Band

ATTENDANCE:

  • REHEARSALS: you must attend all scheduled rehearsals.  (If you are going to be absent for ANY reason you must bring a note to the Band Director from your Parent with explanation.)

  • Color guard members must contact guard director if they are sick or have a true emergency prior to rehearsal.

  • You are expected to be on the field and ready to begin rehearsal at the designated start time.  NOT showing up at that time.

Policy for missing rehearsals:

  • 1st unexcused absence – Warning

  • 2nd unexcused absence – Sit out of Competition

  • 3rd unexcused absence – Out of Marching Band

Color Guard policy for missing rehearsals:         

  • 1st unexcused absence – put on probation

  • 2nd unexcused absence – turn in your equipment

Exceptions for summer:

  • During the summer, if you are on vacation, have a great vacation.  However, please let us know ahead of time when you will be away.

  • If you are legitimately sick, stay home and contact the appropriate person.

  • Otherwise, you are at rehearsal.

    1. COMPETITIONS: NO member may miss a scheduled competition.  Missing a competition will result in expulsion from the group.

    2. FOOTBALL GAMES/PARADES: All members must attend all varsity football games – home and away – as well as the Denville Holiday and Memorial Day Parades.

    3. SECTIONALS: Sectionals are held to help you and your section be the best it can.  Your section leaders conduct these to increase your individual abilities and those of your section as a whole.

    4. BAND CAMP IS MANDATORY to be a member of the Golden Eagles Marching Band.

PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR:

    1. At all times, each and every Marching Band member shall act with and project a professional attitude.

    2. Self-discipline is the best discipline.  Follow ALL instructions given to you by your director, staff, band officers, and chaperones.

    3. No ‘overly friendly’ behavior (PDA) while in uniform.

    4. NO SMOKING – As per the Morris Hills Board of Education rules, there will be NO SMOKING while attending ANY band functions.

    5. UNIFORM: The band uniform should not be considered as just another article of clothing. The MK Golden Eagles Band uniform is a symbol of pride, dedication, and years of hard work, which have led to numerous awards. These uniforms should be worn with pride and respect, and are to be hung up and taken care of when not being worn (see the “Care and Cleaning …” section of the manual for proper uniform care).

    6. Understand that this is an after-school organization.  If any member conducts themselves in any way that may be considered mischievous, devious, rude, or disrespectful, that member may be expelled from the Marching Band, WITHOUT warning, by the director.

ALL POLICIES SET FORTH BY THE MORRIS HILLS REGIONAL BOARD OF EDUCATION APPLY TO THE MARCHING BAND

COLORGUARD:

  1. Attire—Comfortable attire is required during rehearsals.  This includes sweats, shorts (during warm months), dance attire, etc. Please note that late fall nights can be chilly.  Also, ONLY sneakers with laces or dance shoes are permitted. Bare feet are not allowed. Hair should be off the face. These elements will allow you to properly stretch and avoid injury.  The guard uniform is supplied and worn for competitions only. (The uniform and all parts should be hung up properly and stored in the garment bag provided). A marching band raincoat will also be provided.

  2. Requirements—Items the individual will be responsible for: Flag bags and gloves. Flag bags and gloves should be ordered immediately.

  • Flag Bag – A BLACK flag bag will be required to store all your guard equipment when not in use.  This bag protects the equipment from the elements and the material from ripping.    

  • Gloves – Fingerless gloves will be required as part of you uniform.

  • Shoes – Dance shoes will be ordered at band camp.  

  • All guard equipment is the property of Morris Knolls and will be distributed to members during the course of your membership.
